Hubby is fixing up his man cave.. He purchased a used one with the lamp attached - you know the standard oak early 80s model - for a couple of bucks on a local yardsale site. Apparently another fellow was losing his man cave to a kid game room. Possibly it could have to do with him plastering the walls with girlie pics. My hubby has been smart enough to cover the walls with race cars and sports heroes... either way. His loss was hubby's gain :o) But the bummer is that guy smoked in his man cave :( Hubby normally has a pretty good nose for that sort of thing as he detests the smell of cigarette smoke. But he has been pretty sick so he missed it... so we've been on a quest to get that stink out!
After some google research - as credible and scientific as it is - we've formulated a plan. First wipe the wood down with 1 part bleach, 2 part water solution. This removes the residue from the wood. And boy did it ever!! The liquid that came off of that thing was murky. Apparently vinegar and or witch hazel can also be substituted in this step but he went straight to the hard stuff..
Next he found a box big enough to enclose the table, which required some disassembling but he eventually made it work. Close the table in the box with 2 cups of ground coffee. Baking soda can be substituted here but we really love coffee so it seemed like a better choice. Leave it alone for at least 48 hours. Check and repeat steps as necessary.
When all of this is finished he hopes to stain and seal before introducing it to the man cave. There has been some talk about adding buckeye or Brutus decals ~ but I won't be involved in that. I believe there is some unwritten rule that the line of my acceptable arts n' crafts projects is outside of the man cave.
